Nashville Kangaroos vs Atlanta Kookaburras at Candler Park, Atlanta
The Atlanta Kookaburras welcomed their oldest and fiercest rivals the Nashville Kangaroos to Candler Park in the 2016 USAFL season opener. In return, the Kangaroos hosted the Kookaburras at Elmington Park in June.
On a mild March day, the Kookaburras bigger bench could have little influence, whereas the honed skills of the Kangaroos were a deciding factor. The tables were turned at Elmington Park, where a more experienced Kooka crew overpowered the Kangaroos. With the 2016 record now at 1-1, the September 10 game at Atlanta’s Candler Park would be rubber match.
The Nashville had very slow start after sitting in cars for 5 hours and a late arrival, allowing Atlanta to kick 7.0 in the first quarter. The Kookaburras had extended their lead to eight goals at half time. It was a much better second half by the Kangaroos, as they reduced the lead back to seven goals. Nashville may have been more competitive with a better warm-up, and they have some work to do to solve this problem before the lightning matches at USAFL Nationals.
Congratulations to the Atlanta Kookaburras Australian Rules Football Club on the win and for being great hosts.
The Nashville Kangaroos now have an all-time 10-6 record playing the Kookaburras in Atlanta.
