Nashville Kangaroos ANZAC Day Barbeque
April 23, 2005
ANZAC Day is not a glorious day - it is not a celebration about a big victory, it's not a celebration at all - but it is Australia's Day to give thanks for what we have been given by the courage and bravery of our forefathers - many who lost life and limb in a very poorly planned attack on Gallipoli.

Today, accordingly, it was a gloomy spring day in Nashville. The football match scheduled between Vandy and the Music City Roos was cancelled (actually it simply didn't happen), the wind was blowing through you (like an old Philip Island wind) and it was definitely going to rain. I guess today was in some ways very fitting for ANZAC day.

But, as is the spirit of the ANZAC, we took the adversity that we were handed and decided to make the very best of it. Of course our adversity was nothing compared to the shores of Gallipoli - or what those that survived may have endured the rest of their lives - but all the same, in Nashville when it is cold and wet (no-one, but no-one goes out - the city just doesn't like the rain!) - and to our credit we were not deterred.

With a quick goal kicking exercise, then some netball shooting, we were all ready to be treated to President's White's and Umpire Warner's Aussie BBQ - Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Chips, and some beverages. There is no doubt that the future Mrs. Valerie White is marrying a man who can cook - a very good choice in life partners in that department!.  When the food was ready we all huddled together - ate our fill, told some stories - and then were treated to some tremendous ANZAC Biscuits (thanks, Nicole!).  We also got to congratulate the Roogirls (pictured above) with their first official club trophy, won at the Atlanta Tournament last weekend. There were a few club giveaways based on a thorough knowledge of what ANZAC day specifically commemorates - and then the rain came a pourin'. And our ANZAC Day BBQ for 2005 was complete.

Thanks to all who attended today. We will have many other great club celebrations this year - and we will certainly be looking forward to better weather at next years ANZAC day (our second annual). It was really neat having the netball crew come out - the girls and their spouses made us look like a very respectable lot. It is also good to be reminded of our humility,  and to reflect on our own adversities (however big or small they may be) - and gain strength from the spirit of the ANZAC. In this way we will never forget - and their spirit will help us endure.
