FAN-BLOOMIN-TASTIC!

There were a lot of firsts for the Nashville Kangaroos Netball Team this weekend in Atlanta.
With the club only being established in January this year, we have definitely come a long way:

  • First time the Lady Roos have attended a tournament

  • First time the team has played together on a netball court

  • For some, first time ever playing netball!

  • and. to top it off. OUR FIRST TROPHY!!

The day started with some apprehension. with the march past judges ogling each of the 13 teams. all we could think of was ‘Please don't let us win the march past!' Despite looking fantastic in our brand new uniforms we were there to play netball, not to win the fashion parade. We exploded onto the courts, with our first game against the Manhattan International Netball Club. Goal for goal we played – Nicole Bryce making some crucial shots when it counted, Tess Leota making some crunch intercepts. After our first game jitters – the game ended with a disputed tied game. Once we got the first game out of the way, we were good to go.

We ended the day 5th which was awesome! - Tied 1 game, Won 2 games and lost 3. The winner of the tournament was the Jamerican team from New York. The Lady Roos came away with the trophy – Most Disciplined Team.

What does that mean? It means we were the team that had it together – we were on time, we were organized, we volunteered (not 1) but 4 umpires, we helped other teams with their umpiring, we did not argue with the umpires, and sportsmanship was high in our camp!

This is definitely a huge achievement! Congratulations Ladies!!!!

Our roster for this weeks tournament was::

GS: Nicole Bryce (Great shooting – despite injury)
GA/GD: Tess Leota (Outstanding player on both ends of the court)
WA/C: Debbie Warner (A Rock! Did not miss a centre pass!)
C/WA: Taryn Molony (Played fantastic despite a fractured thumb!)
WD/WA: Bethany Warner (Watch out for this one! She's our new up and comer!)
WD: Angela Suastegui (Leaps and bounds is how I would describe her progress – great work!)
GD/GA: Moreen Logsdon (Way to go Pres!)
GK: Callie Minton (Did a great job stepping into this position – definitely a team player!)

Special mention and thanks to Tess and Terrence – a couple of Kiwis – Love you guys!! You helped us immensely. We really appreciated it! We have lovingly nicknamed our first trophy ‘Tess' in Tess' honour – so if you see us with our trophy don't hesitate to say hello to Tess. Terrence, I might add, in amongst a plethora of women, did a wonderful job cheering, scoring and letting us know when the other teams tried to take our centre pass!

Also, big thanks to our girls that stepped up and did the umpiring – they were not the easiest matches to call and you girls did terrific!

Cheers,

Moreen Logsdon, President
